A Message from the SBL on 2012 World Water Day

Iringa District Hospital where the water project is implemented.

Every year on the 22nd of March, the world commemorates International World Water day to draw attention to the importance of freshwater while advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The theme this year is ‘Water and Food Security.’ Serengeti Breweries, since last year played a significant role in providing access to clean, sustainable safe water through the EABL Foundation ‘Water of Life’ initiative at Mkuranga District.

In 2011 alone, SBL provided clean water to over 270,000 people in Tanzania through our Water of Life agenda. As a business we remain committed to reducing our impact on water in our production facilities and supply chains.

To mark the 2012 World Water Day, we have lined up activities to highlight our commitment to addressing the water challenge within our operations and externally in the community.

A week from 16th to 22nd March, SBL has partnered with the Ministry of Water through various activities including training, media programmes in order to educate the community at large on protecting the water sources and infrastructure.

SBL will be launching Water of Life programme in Iringa where there will be National World Water Week Celebrations and through our Water of Life programme we will be investing over 20 million through our water harvesting programme at a district hospital in Iringa targeting more than 150,000 beneficiaries.

On March 22, 2012 there will be a special documentary on ITV featuring SBL Managing Director – Richard Wells and Corporate Relations Director talking about SBL Water of Life Projects and our commitment to our water projects this year and in the coming years.

During the World Water Week, there will be an ongoing activities in Mwanza, Kilimanjaro and Dar Es Salaam where staff will be participating on some WOL activities including water and sanitation project on the storm water drainage from SBL Moshi Breweries to TPC. SBL will be investing more than 80million on this project.   I urge all Serengeti staff and the community around to take time and participate so as to bring a change in our community we live in.

At a personal level, we can all adopt small changes in behavior, to help make a big difference this World Water Day, 2012, (and everyday) by protecting water infrastructure and water sources.

Your are all invited to come witness and be a part of these very important milestones as Serengeti Breweries Limited  continues on its journey to addressing the water challenge within our operations and externally in the community.
